Go inside the karaoke contest that’s reaching fans across the country.
Be More Chill owes a massive debt to its fans, since the online frenzy for its regional cast recording laid the groundwork for its Broadway run, which begins performances at the Lyceum on February 13. That’s why the show is taking care to reward its supporters in meaningful and memorable ways.
Until February 12, for instance, fans across the country can enter the Be More Chill karaoke contest. Anyone aged 13 or up may submit a video of themselves performing one of three songs from the show, accompanied by the official cast recording’s newly released karaoke tracks. Composer Joe Iconis and book writer Joe Tracz will select their 20 favorites from the submission pool, and the public will vote on that group to choose a winner. The victor will not only be flown to New York to see the show, but also have a chance to perform their winning song at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre.
While this is certainly an opportunity to boost awareness of Be More Chill‘s Broadway run, it’s also a chance for the production to embrace its community.
As Iconis says, “From our first readings of Be More Chill, it was clear that these songs were striking a chord with audiences, and the thing that has been most incredible to me has been watching groups of humans singing along to these show tunes which clearly mean so much to them. It feels only fitting that as our ‘little show thatcould’ bops its way to Broadway, we should celebrate with the biggest singalong party ever. Be More Chill celebrates individuality and personality and all those things that make us different, so I can’t wait to hear our fans give their own distinct interpretations of these Be More Chill jams! I hope they all bring their own, weird, beautiful selves to their covers and share them loudly for the world to hear.”
